Thank you for so adequately describing this “build the plane as we fly it” career. I hope this reaches beyond the social media community so more can understand why this career is different and important.

I work in social media for a very traditional organization. While the opportunity to drive innovation and reach new, valuable audiences through social for my organization is exciting, it can be isolating to work in a field that my colleagues are unfamiliar with. Nice to know I'm not alone in this feeling. Thank you for starting this newsletter and community! Looking forward to expanding my knowledge here!

Thank you so much for doing this! It really is such a fun job, but sometimes I feel so lost because I seriously have no superiors or anyone to talk to about it!

Thank youuuuu for this, Rachel! I've always wanted a community of social media peeps to talk about things like this! Managing social media for a big brand has been...well...INSANE this year and imposter syndrome got to me hard especially when I saw comments like "fire your intern" or "your social media team is garbage" (ya that one hurt). Social media is just one of those few jobs where you get real time feedback from your customers/followers and that's both terrifying and thrilling. Can't wait to read what comes next!

Sooooo happy you're doing this, Rachel!! I'm chomping at the bits to try to figure out a healthy or sane way to structure the always-on community management/social function as I scale my biz... all I know for actual sure is that, to your point, the way these roles are set up isn't really fair or equitable or kind.

Thank you for sharing your insights as social media professional. Also, I share the same thought as you said: "When I turned to books, articles, and magazines to learn more, I often felt like the information was already out of date..."

Thank you so much Rachel for this! It’s a shame that companies and brand don’t care enough about their online presence especially when the « internet is the future ». Can’t wait to read your next issue !

I am so glad that social media work is being given the light it deserves, honestly, at some point in my career, the “intern” comments stuck with me and made me feel like I was not doing a relevant enough job. Thank you for writing about this!

Amen! As someone who spent years in B2B marketing, social media was always an after thought or an additional bullet on someone's list of responsibilities and I was constantly struggling to ask for more resources or investment into it, but "seasoned marketing leaders" didn't "see value".

I'm so thankful you're writing this. I'm currently trying to understand how to make social media strategy more important for small brands I work for, even the agency I work at doesn't understand how much of an undertaking a consistent social media presence is.

Thank you for this 🙌🏼 Didn’t think I realized that I needed the affirmation that I work in a role that doesn’t have tenured employees of more than a decade. Definitely learning on the fly, definitely the social media manager/marketer/videographer/photographer/graphic designer/brand representative for my organization and it’s exhausting. Excited to keep reading & learning from you.

So excited about this! Thank you so much for your time and energy. As the sole community manager for a big brand, it’s so nice and refreshing to feel seen.

I'm really looking forward to hearing more of your insights, Rachel! I'm a freelance musician and for both my own career and as a part-time arts admin, Social Media takes up a chunk of my working life. While the organization I work for is extremely small (just 3 women getting everything done!) so I can't relate to the experience of working at a huge corporate firm, I am curious and excited to hear more from you!

Somewhat related to the intern topic is the notion that "social media is easy." Thinking about this continually while watching Emily in Paris; her account blows up after she posts the most low-effort content with absolutely zero planning or strategy. The way social media is portrayed on the show feels very much written by someone who has never worked in social media. The portrayal on the show -- and this idea in general -- feels somewhat akin to that iceberg meme (i.e.: the tip of the iceberg is the surface-level stuff while all the strategy is below the surface).
