Gary is hardly self-made more people should know he was given a successful wine and liquor business grossing about 3 million dollars. I find so many people in publishing, media, and entrepreneurship circles have familial wealth that goes against their crafted success narratives.

Thanks for this article. Every time I go on LinkedIn I see one on Gary Vee's posts. He's always stuck me as your typical loud-mouth, know-it-all, con-man type. Much of his advise seems simple-minded, but he delivers it with such confidence and attitude that his fans just lap it up. I'm always amazed by how many comments he gets praising his so-called wisdom.

I discovered Gary Vee almost 2 years ago at my lowest point of struggling with imposter syndrome. I didn’t like him at first because of the swearing and the ‘New Jersey Energy’; I thought he was full of crap.

But then I actually listened to what he was saying and watched carefully what he was doing. He was preaching empathy, happiness, self-awareness and lack of entitlement. So many people say they want something but don’t do anything to get it.

What I saw from Gary was a blueprint on how to build my brand (for Free!) and get the courage to leave a job I hated and go full time in my current business!

So many things wrong with this article and the personal attacks, which makes me not want to give them my business (We we’re all taught never to disparage our competitors).

The level of entitlement from the comment section is disgusting. If you’re not willing to work hard for your dreams, then go be an employee somewhere and enjoy your 9-5.

My advice, slow down to ACTUALLY listen to what Gary is saying, past all the cursing and bravado is a humble man that wants everyone to win. Success = Happiness ...that is his biggest message to his followers. ✌🏾

There's a big problem with your article. If he wasn't giving great advice, he'd have no followers. The guy is absolutely correct on 90 percent of what he says!!! Work your ass off while your young and pile up cash or invest it!!! I think he's fantastic!!!

Hey Rachel, I disagree with this article.

Gary's wants us to be happy, and a lot of his advice has made my life happier.

Like not buying things to impress people.

Striving to do what you love, and to love the process rather than the salary. Not caring what others think is the single greatest piece of advice he's given me.

Gary wants our words to match our ambition, and he's said many times that if you want to make 50k a year and have a family and social life, that's amazing. But to the people who want to be billionaires or the best of the best, you really have to work your fucking face off.

I'm not in social media, though I did graduate marketing, so I can't comment on how effective his social media advice is. I will share that it was because of Gary Vee that I quit my job in SEO to pursue a career in 3d game art. It's been 3 years now and I've given it everything I've got. Since then, I've learned how to draw, landed a job in graphic design, and am in the process of building my 3d portfolio! I also found I have a deep love for artistic anatomy.

Before all this I had 0 artistic background. I considered myself too dumb or untalented to attempt to learn art. Also I was embarassed that my peers would find out and make fun of me. But it was thanks to Gary Vee giving me permission to try that started it all, specifically his "What to do after College video," (and I definitely thought he was an annoying guru when I first saw him too lol.) I'm very grateful to him for that.

I hope my sharing can show you that to those of us who were lost with low self esteem after graduating from colleges we were pressured to go to, Gary Vee's advice really had an impact.

I don’t care for Gary Vee much but this is a clear misrepresentation of him. Try doing some honest research instead of cherry-picking hot quotes.

Superb post, Rachel. Thank you. I'm so sick of people thinking they have to "bleed out their eyes" for their company. That's no way to live, even if it worked (which it doesn't).

He's a "guru" now, just doing appearances at all those companies offering Trump University type products. All get rich quick schemes for him now.

Having worked with his company as our client, I don’t think he is a genius or doing it especially well! The company isn’t efficient, nobody seems happy, they treat vendors badly and the level of knowledge and experience within is questionable. I guess his “advice” doesn’t translate to his own staff’s success.

I regret the time I spent making content as my "job application" for his content creation company only to get a generic rejection letter the next day. I feel like that system is a ploy to steal ideas from creators.

Thanks for your great eyes and perspective on the social media industry. Gary V is like the Muhammad Ali of social -- loud, brash, and full of testosterone. We need more fresh, factual, feminine voices like yours in the social media space.

I feel the same way about Jay Baer and anyone else who is prominent on the Social Media conference circuit. Thank you for saying what we were all thinking!

He’s updated a lot of the things he’s said about “hustle” and “bleeding your eyes out” a lot of his messaging has changed. Now it’s, “Do what you wanna do, document it, post it online, reply and engage constantly, self awareness, and not care what others think.” He’s good at listening to his audience and giving his take on it. I don’t agree with some of his stuff and that’s fine, I do believe he has great teachings and is constantly evolving with the times

I literally am crushing business right now because I understand and apply Gary V principles. I’m a caretaker and was in debt when I started. I don’t think he is for the weeping willows of the world who are looking for reasons to be offended. Work hard, don’t spend money to impress people you don’t like, give before you ask, stay consistent, don’t ignore changes in tech, know when entrepreneurship isn’t for you, define what success means to you and adjust accordingly. He literally says if you want to make 70k and coach your kid’s softball team, cool. You’re winning. Gary V is a huge inspiration.
